In response to the death of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a match in Ghana, the Ghanaian Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has formed a seven-member committee to investigate the incident. Headed by Major (Retd) Amarkai Amarteifio, the committee includes former Ghana Boxing Authority President Peter Zwennes and veteran sports journalists Ekow Ansah and Samuel Bartels. The inquiry aims to scrutinize the actions of the boxing league organizers and assess if they followed international protocols to prevent such tragedies. Concerns raised by the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control cite potential negligence, including a mismatch between Olanrewaju's weight class and the lack of a pre-fight medical examination. Additionally, there were discrepancies related to the scheduled fight date, initially approved for March 28 but held on March 29 without proper notification. An autopsy confirmed that Olanrewaju died from sudden cardiac arrest. The investigation underscores pressing issues related to athlete health management in sports events.
