Hong Kong Issues Arrest Warrant for Australian Professor Over Pro-Democracy Ties

Geopolitics

Hong Kong authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Feng Chongyi, an Australian academic from the University of Technology Sydney. He is accused of subversion for his involvement with the unofficial pro-democracy group "Hong Kong Parliament". This group, largely based in Canada, aims to achieve self-determination for Hong Kong and establish a new constitution. The Hong Kong police allege that the organization seeks to overthrow the Hong Kong and Chinese governments and have placed a $HK200,000 bounty on Feng. Similar arrest warrants and bounties have been issued for several other overseas-based activists and academics.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong criticized these actions, emphasizing the importance of free expression and assembly, and stated that the Australian government strongly objects to the broad application of Hong Kong’s national security law. The law has been controversial since its imposition in 2020 following widespread protests.

Moreover, the UK's Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary have condemned the arrest warrants as acts of transnational repression, asserting that these actions damage Hong Kong’s international reputation. The Chinese government, however, dismisses such criticisms, urging foreign governments to refrain from interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs and maintain that such laws are necessary to ensure stability and security.
