Banana production grows by 2% with a total of 2.6 million tons in 2023

Banana production in Colombia increased by 2% in 2023, reaching a total of 2.6 million tons. The country has a total of 114,377 cultivated hectares, with higher productivity in the Antioquia region. However, concerns were raised about the Fusarium RT4 disease, which threatens to impact banana production. The disease, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, can cause plant wilting and death. There is currently no chemical, biological, or genetic control measure in place. The Colombian Ministry of Agriculture has been implementing a project to support banana producers in affected regions, investing $1 billion in training and biosecurity measures. Despite challenges, banana exports increased by 18% in the first quarter of 2024.
