The Tanzanian government announced it has secured funding for the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Uvinza in Kigoma (Tanzania) to Musongati in Burundi. This development is part of a larger endeavor managed by the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), which involves the construction of a 2,561-kilometer line linking the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam to Mwanza on Lake Victoria, with branches extending to Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. The announced funding has been facilitated by three international financial institutions: Standard Chartered, China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure), and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The TRC acting director general, Mateshi Tito, indicated that contract signings to commence construction will occur soon, although the exact financial amount was not disclosed. Meanwhile, the overall construction progress for various sections of the railway is underway, with significant completion metrics reported for different line sections. The project has already involved a massive investment of $10 billion, and the government anticipates that the income from freight services, expected to start in the coming February, will significantly increase revenue. Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile, expressed contentment with the project's progress, acknowledging the extensive investment and the government's commitment to its diligent execution.
